Former guard at Auschwitz on trial in Germany

A 94-year-old former guard at Auschwitz is on trial and accuse as an accessory to the murder of a minimum of one hundred seventy, thousand individuals.

Reinhold Hanning was twenty years old in 1942 once he started serving as a Waffen SS guard at the death camp in occupied Poland, where over one.1 million Jews were killed by the Nazis.

There was a significant police presence round the court within the western city of Detmold as Hanning walked in, sporting glasses and a dark brown tweed jacket and looking out at the bottom, for a session restricted to only 2 hours thanks to his age.

Prosecutors said Hanning had joined the Waffen SS, the armed wing of the Nazi Party, voluntarily at the age of eighteen and fought in eastern Europe throughout the first stages of world war 2 before being transferred to auschwitz in January 1942.

Accused by the prosecutor's office in Dortmund in addition as by thirty eight joint plaintiffs from Hungary, Israel, Canada, Britain, the u. s. and Germany, Hanning can hear the testimony of former camp inmates in court.

But Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff, responsible for law-breaking investigations at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said from his workplace in Jerusalem that age shouldn't be AN obstacle to prosecution."When you think of those cases, do not consider frail, old, sick men and girls," he said, "but of {young folks|children|kids|youngsters|teenagers|teens|adolescents|tykes|youth} who devoted their energies to a system that enforced the ultimate solution and aimed to obliterate the Jewish people."
