A deadly earthquake 6.4 richter toppled down a 17-story apartment building in southern Taiwan, in the city of Tainan, killing at least seven people, including a 10-day-old girl, and triggering frantic efforts to rescue the people trapped inside.
As a search for survivors in the rubble went on rescuers, plucking more than 220 survivors to safety, with dozens taken to hospital.
According to government sources buildings in nine other locations in the city of 2 million people had collapsed and five were left tilting at alarming angles.
City officials said it was too early to determine if poor construction was a factor in the collapse, while President Ma Ying-jeou visited an emergency center and hospital in Tainan.
