Prosecutors says IS ordered Italian resident to attack Rome

Italian prosecutors say an Islamic State fighter had ordered a Moroccan-born man living in Italy to carry out attacks in Rome during Holy Year.

Milan prosecutor Maurizio Romanelli told reporters Thursday that investigators intercepted the communication to carry out attacks in Italy, "with particular attention to the city of Rome," from within Islamic State territory during an investigation into foreign fighters in Italy.

There was no indication any attacks were imminent and Romanelli said they acted quickly to close the investigation.

Authorities announced six arrest warrants as part of the investigation, including for a couple planning to leave Italy for Islamic State territory with their children, ages 2 and 4, and another couple with small children who had left to join Islamic State last year.
